My concerns are now confirmed: oil pan gasket is leaking on my wife’s car.
I noticed a couple of new drops of oil on my driveway. Today I got under there and saw a little guy ready to drip and ran my hand around everything above and around the oil pan. Filter, valve cover, etc, all bone dry. Then I ran my hand on the backside of the pan gasket.
Fresshhhhhh oil. The car has 114k miles. I got under there and tightened down some of the studs (I assume they’re studs and not screws, but what d o I know. All I know is 10mm, 10mm, TEN MILLIMETER). Some tightened rather easily, back where I found the oil. So I have some faint hope.
When this doesn’t work, it looks like replacing it will be relatively easily. But I do need one of those swively crescent doo- boppies as two of them are extremely difficult to reach.
Well. That's the end of this post. Farewell.

Easy replacement, but until then, wait til it’s cool and just slap some black RTV sealant on the outside of the gasket. It can slow things down and buy some time.
This is the best place you can have an oil leak.

We can't have her car marking it's territory on the new driveway.

I was told my oil pan gasket has a leak... 8 years ago.
However I do know my oil drain plug has a 1 drop a day leak.

Probably a thin spot in the fipg. Ideally drop the pan, apply a fresh coat of genuine toyota lexus denture cream and enjoy corn on the cob for the next 100k miles.

WARNING - It is super easy to snap off those valve cover bolts. I’ve busted off my share. I believe the spec is 10 foot pounds. So grab the ratchet at the center and don’t twist too har d.
Then go around and torque them all and I believe you will find that it will snug down and be OK.

I meant to say oil pan bolts but ditto for valve covers.....

Do you know the name of the swivelly doo-boppie? Or could you post a picture? It sounds useful.

Why the hell would they spec the oil pan bolts so weakly?

I just suspect a 10mm head bolt just doesn’t have a lot of metal to give it strength. it is what it is.
And the bolt can’t be much bigger, or needs to be much bigger in that area. Just a warning from a guy that has busted them.

You don’t want to crush the gasket too badly, because then it will fail. Too loose = bad. Too tight, also = bad.
